
The study was to evaluate the characteristic of corneal transplanted patients treated at the Vietnam National Institute of Ophthalmology (VNIO) for over a period of 10 years. Medical records of corneal transplanted patients from 2002 to 2011 were reviewed. The following parameters were collected and analyzed: age, gender, job, living place, the original corneal pathology for which the graft was indicated. During the 10 years period, 1016 patients (1049 eyes) under went corneal transplantation at the VNIO. These patients came from 44 provinces throughout Vietnam. The means age was 45.3 year old; 63.8 percent of them were labor workers. Common corneal pathologies consisted of infectious corneal ulcers (53.4 percent), corneal scar (18.3 percent), corneal dystrophy (9.4 percent), failure graft (6.5 percent), pseudoaphakic bullous keratopathy (4.1 percent), and corneal burn (4 percent). The less common pathologies were keratoconus (1.4 percent), corneal degeneration (0.6 percent), congenital corneal opacity (0.5 percent) and some ot.her diseases. During the 10 year period, VNIO have performed corneal graft for patients from 44 provinces. The most common indication for corneal graft is infectious corneal ulcer. The non-infectious grafted disease is slowly increasing.
