Objectives: To evaluate periodontal status in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Four hundred type 2 diabetics (diagnosed by criteria of IDF-2005) with age or = 45 years old getting oral examination at Department of Odonto-Stomatology Bachmai Hospital from 6/2010 to 6/2011 were invited to participate in the cross-sectional study. Periodontal examination included full-mouth assessment for Oral Hygiene Index simplified (OHI-S), Gingival Index (GI) and Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Need (CPITN). Results: Type 2 diabetics' oral hygiene was very poor with the mean of OHI-S as 4.3 + or - 1.1. All of the subjects were suffered from gingivitis. Among them: 11.3 percent mild, 65.7 percent moderate and 23 percent severe gingivitis. Periodontal status of type 2 diabetics was very poor with percentage of CPI 2, CPI3 and CPI4 as 37.5 percent, 43.3 percent and 19.2 percent, respectively.
