
A research was conducted by investigating all death cases due to rabies, and vaccinated cases at 12 points of 11 provinces/cities in Son La as well as interviewing health workers and local government officials. The results showed that: In 3 years from 2010 to 2012, the proportion of people bitten by rabid dogs and exposed to death increased (attack rate per 100,000 corresponding population was: 0.0 - 0.4 to 1.5). The death cases occurred in the people over 15 years old (72.2 percent) and Thai people (77.3 percent). The fatality rate was high in farmers (59.1 percent) and students (31.8 percent), similarly in both men and women, mainly occurring in April and September. 100 percent of the patients having seizure would be dead and they were unvaccinated cases. The reason of subjectiveness accounted for 50 percent, 36.4 percent due to a lack of knowledge, and there were some other reasons such as lateness, no money for shots. Wild bites were responsible for most cases (50 percent), bites from sick dogs were responsible for 9.1 percent and 13.6 percent were blamed for dogs with rabies symptoms. The percentage of people who cleaned their wound and didn't were 40 and 45 percent respectively. The incubation period was from 30 to 90 days. Dog bites were popular in February, March, May, June, July and August.
