Objective: to evaluate the effects of plasma exchange in patients with acute liver failure. Methods: 14 patients with acute liver failure at the ICU of Viet-Tiep Hai Phong Hospital were treated with PEX with TPE2000 membrane, blood flow rate was 120 ml/min replacement fluid was fresh frozen plasma, ultrafiltration rate was 1000 ml per hour, standarzided heparin was used for anticoagulation. Parameters were measured before the beginning and after of the PEX. Result: After PEX GOT, GPT, GGT, bilirubin decreased significantly (p 0.01), PT increased, INR and APTT decreased significantly (p 0.05). More common complication was allergic reactions accounted for 3/31 (9.7 percent) of the total number of episodes. However, any patient has anaphylaxis or infection. Conclusions: PEX improves liver and coagula lion function in patients with acute liver failure. Allergic reactions were 9.7 percent. The mortality rate was 50.0 percent.
