
Noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation (NPPV) improves respiratory muscle fatigue and arterial blood gases in acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The study was to assess clinical and paraclinical responses and outcomes of NPPV in patients with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The results showed, improved of respiratory failure; reduction of 76.1 percent cases of intubations; shortened treatment duration: 17.7 + or - 9.3 days versus 20.2 + or - 15 days. Increased pH from 7.34 + or - 0.32 to 7.4 + or - 0.32; PaCO2 decreased from 75.1 + or - 14.27 to 55.2 + or - 9.67 mmHg; PaO2 increased from 59.6 + or - 12.21 mmHg to 65.1 + or - 7.35 mmHg; HCO3 decreased from 39.7 + or - 6.61 mmol/l to 31.1 + or - 6.08 mmol/l.
