
Purpose: Authorsassessed the efficacy and safety of sildenafil citrate as treatment for erectile dysfunction. Materials and Methods: During 2011, a total of 327 completely evaluated men with chronic erectile dysfunction were treated with sildenafil citrate. Response was assessed prospectively by baselin~ and followup physician interviews, and by a patient self-administered 15-item questionnaire on the domains of patient treatment response and satisfaction, partner treatment satisfaction, comparative previous treatment satisfaction, adverse effects, and patient and partner quality of life. Results: There were 223 patients (68.2 percent) received sildenafil who completed the questionnaire; including 67 (30.1 percent) and 54 (24.2 percent) who previously had undergone treatment for erectile dysfunction with orientally original medecine and with PDE5 inhibitors, respectively. In 164 patients (73.5 percent) who achieved erection suitable for sexual intercourse. Adverse effects in 48.8 percent of cases were assessed as mild in 61.5 percent, moderate in 35.8 percent and severe in 2.7 percent. The most common adverse effects were facial flushing in 32.3 percent of cases, headaches in 21.1 percent, nasal congestion in 12.1 percent, dyspepsia in 10.1 percent and dizziness in 10.8 percent. There were 9 (5.5 percent) discontinued sildenafil as a direct result of intolerable adverse effects. Baseline patient and partner quality of life scores significantly improved after sildenafil treatment (p0.01). Conclusions: Although approximately 50 percent of men reported adverse effects when treated with sildenafil citrate, most were considered mild, well tolerated and rarely resulted in treatment cessation. Until now, sildenafil citrate is effective oral first line treatment for erectile dysfunction.
