Background: In Vietnam, crystal methamphetamine is the second most widely abused drug following heroin, yet information on ice use is still very limited. This paper draws qualitative data from a mixed method study on ATS among female sex workers (FSWs) in Hanoi. Objectives: To describe the context of crystal methamphetamine use among FSWs in Hanoi in 2012. Method: Qualitative design was employed, thirty in-depth interviews were conducted among FSWs who reported using ATS. Thematic analysis was used using NVIVO software 8.0. Findings. Hostels, where sexual behaviors are facilitated, were often the place of choice as these places were considered to be ideal for crystal methamphetamine use. Group use of crystal methamphetamine is common. These groups often include couples or users with both sexes. In addition, these groups are not fixed. Conclusions. the context of crystal methamphetamine use often facilitates risky sexual behaviors. Recommendation: Future harm reduction interventions addressing sexual risk behaviors among FSWs should take into account the context of use among this group.
