Purpose: To evaluate the outcome of Cultivated Oral Mucosal Epithelial Transplantation (COMET) in treatment of eyes with bilateral severe ocular surface disorders (OSD). Methods: Since April 2009 the cultivated oral mucosal epithelial transplantation (COMET) was performed on 10 eyes with bilateral severe OSD (7 cases of chemical burn, 3 cases of drop-like gelatinous dystrophy). Postoperative treatments were corticosteroids and lubricants. Results: At 48h after surgery, the epithelial sheets were survived. During follow-up time (mean 13 months), the ocular surface remained stable and smooth in 7 eyes, visual acuity was improved in 6 eyes, although all eyes presented moderate peripheral neovascularization. In 2 eyes with deep damage in anterior chamber and the lens due to chemical substance the graft was destroyed at 1 and 3 months postoperative, 1 eye had recurrent of total corneal neovascularisation. Conclusion: COMET is effective solution in management of bilateral severe OSD.
