Middle ear atelectasis is a form of dangerous otitis media because it can develop into cholesteatoma. The objective of this study was to evaluate results of surgical treatment for middle ear atelectasis. Results 42.4 percent of the ears examined had ossicular damages; and damage of the incus was the most common lesion. After about 5.8 months post corrective tympanoplasty, 92.4 percent of the ears were free of recurrent retraction. Five out of 66 ears (7.6 percent) had re-collapsed resulting from generalized atelectasis of grade III or grade IV.
