
Objectives: To analyze the complications of combined vitreo lensectomy surgery in eyes with cataract and opaque vitreous. Subjects: 83 eyes (83 patients) with vitreous opacity and post traumatic cataract aged form 3 to 45 were treated in Trauma department, VNIO. Methods: prospective descriptive study. Patients were thoroughly examined and were operated with vitreo lensectomy. The intra operative incidents, early and long term complications were noted. Results: in this group of 83 patients: there were 89.4 percent male; penetrating injuries with IOFB 44.6 percent; without IOFB 44.6 percent; ocular contusion 10.8 percent, 74.7 percent had moderate vitreous opacity; 25.3 percent had grade 3 vitreous opacity. Intra operative incidents: corneal edema 16.9 percent, low IOP 14.4 percent, RD 12 percent, uveitis 6 percent, increased IOP 6 percent. Late post-operative complications: subluxated IOL 9.6 percent, phthisis bulbi 8.4 percent, epiretinal membranes 4.8 percent. Conclusion: The vitreolensectomy for posttraumatic cataract combined with vitreous opacity was a complicated procedure which could become problematic at any stages.
