Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common digestive disease. Gastroesophageal scintigraphy is one of value method for diagnosis of this disease. Aims: to assess the correlation between gastroesophageal reflux index with both clinical symtoms and gastroesophageal endoscopic pictures. Subjects and method: Authorsconducted a cross-sectional study involed 72 patients with gastroesophageal reflux symtoms who were underwent clinical examination, gastroesophageal endoscopy and scintigraphy. Results: all of the patients without heartburn had reflux index less than 4 percent but 71.4 percent of the cases with heartburn had reflux index ~ 4 percent. There were 82.1 percent of the patients without endoscopic esophagitis had reflux index less than 4 percent. In contrast, 85.7 percent of the patients presenting endoscopic esophagitis had reflux index ~ 4 percent. Conclusions: heartburn, which is the most typical symtom of GERD, and endoscopic esophageal injuries are correlated with gastroesophageal reflux index measured by the radioisotopic scintiscan. Combination of clinical symtoms, endoscopic appearances and scintigraphy may be helpful for diagnosis of GERD.
