The 49 specimens of lateral gastrocnemius muscle have been used to study the neurovascular distribution inside the muscle. Result obtained permit us to classify the arterial arrangement into 4 main types. In general, branches of lateral gastrocnemius artery (together with accompanying veines and nerves) run along the direction of muscular fibres from the proximal to distal head and there are always more than two main artery branches suplying the two sides of the muscle. This arrangement permits surgeons to devide the lower haft of the lateral gastrocnemius muscle into two part with dependant vessels. This is the anatomical basis of muscular and musculocutaneous flaps that use only a part of lateral gastrocnemius muscle. the authors have discibered and discussed the correlation between nerve distribution and vessel distribution.
