Virus load has been used to diagnose and monitor patients who are being treated for Chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Quantitating HBsAg levels has been proposed to be a surrogate marker in CHB. The authors aimed to describe HBsAg levels in CHB and to investigate the correlation with serum HBV DNA levels. The results showed that, mean HBsAg titres was 4570.88 + or - 2.748IU/ml; 3.66 + or - 0.44 log10lU/ml, HBV DNA was 7.3 + or - 1.67 log10 copies/ml. HBsAg, HBV DNA level were significantly higher in HBeAg(+) patients (3.76 + or - 0.45 log10lU/ml; 8.08 + or - 1.18 log10copies/ml) than the HBeAg (-) patients (3.46 + or - 0.33 log10IU/ml; 5.79 + or - 1.55 log10copies/ml). There was no significant correlation between HBsAg and HBV DNA levles (p = 0.231, r = 0.136). HBsAg and HBV DNA levels were not correlated in both HBeAg positive and negative patient. In conclusion, Quantitative serum HBsAg is a new specific marker and independent for CHB diagnosis. New guidelines should include quantitative HBsAg in management.
