Introduction: Retinal detachment remains one of the most serious complications of cataract surgery. Scleral buckle (SB) surgery is one of the treatment options in pseudophakic and aphakic retinal detachment (RD). Purposes: To find out the anatomical and visual outcome of SB in pseudophakic and aphakic RD. Subjects and methods: a series of 32 consecutive eyes of 32 patients with RD that had undergone conventional SB surgery. Postoperative retinal status at 3 weeks, 6 weeks and 3 months were recorded to see the anatomical success i; rate after retinal reattachment surgery. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at 3 months follow-up was noted. Results: The mean age of the patients was 56.18 :+ or -15.43 years. Twenty eight eyes (87.5 percent) had primary attachment by 6 weeks duration. Four eyes had undergone repeat surgery within a six-week duration (pars plana vitrectomy). Thirty patients had follow-up visit to 12 weeks, achieving retinal attachment in 25 eyes (83.3 percent). Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at 3 months was better than 20/200 in 12 eyes (43.3 percent), BCVA better or equal to 20/400 but less than 20/200 in 14 eyes (46.7 percent) and BCVA less than 20/400 in 4 eyes (13.3 percent). Conclusion: Conventional scleral buckling has a good outcome for pseudophakic RD.
