
Pneumonia in children under 5 years old is common and is the leading cause of death in Vietnam. Clinically, most of cases are not tested to find pathogens, especially viruses. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at two provincial hospitals in Ben Tre province to characterize the epidemiology of virus infections in children under 5 years old with pneumonia. Results showed that rate of viral infection was very high (48.62 percent). Agents detected include: Rhino virus (21.6 percent), parainfluenza (19.89 percent), hBoV (13.26 percent), influenza (10.2 percent), adeno virus (6.63 percent), hMPV (3.57 percent), hRSV (1.02 percent), Corona HKU1 (0.51 percent). Average age is 16 months old, mainly from 2 years of age (79.7 percent); Men were higher than women with the ratio of male/female was 2.1/1.
