
Nutritional education and communication activities have been implemented nationwide for many decades however it is facing a number of difficulties particularly in remote areas such as Son La province. Objectives: (I) Examine the coverage of nutritional education and communication (NEC) activities for Thai-minority-mothers feeding children under 5 years old in some communes in Muong La district and Son La city in 2010; (2) Determine challenges of the NEC activities at the studied districts. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 384 Thai-minority-mothers feeding children under 5 years old. Results: Coverage of direct NEC in some communes in Muong La district and Son La city is 91.7 percent of mothers feeding children under 5 years old; coverage of NEC via mass media channels is 100 percent communes; coverage of EC materials is 46.2 percent mothers feeding children under 5 years old. Major difficulties are: 92.2 percent had the Poor certificate; percentage of mothers applying EC messages into practice is 51.4 percent, shortages in budget and EC materials.
