The study aimed to assess femoral neck osteoporosis in elderly type 2 diabetic patients and related factors. One hundred diabetic patients aged over 60 years old, diagnosed according to WHO criteria 2006 were cross-section surveyed. All subjects were clinical examination, and performed laboratory tests: plasma glucose insulinemia and bone density (BMD) of femoral neck. The results showed that the average age was 68.9 +/- 6.9. Average femoral neck BMD in men and women was 0.90 +/- 0.1 g/cm2 and 0.7 +/- 0.2 g/cm2, respectively. Femoral neck osteoporosis in elderly diabetic patients was associated with BMI (p 0.05) and not related to the duration of diabetes, fasting plasma glucose, plasma insulinemia, plasma levels of calcium and ionized calcium (p 0.05). In summary, the screening and early diagnosis of femoral neck osteoporosis should be done to prevent fractures complications due to osteoporosis in elderly diabetic patients.
