
Beta-thalassemia is a common inherited disorder of anemia in many countries worldwide. Viet Nam is in a region having a relatively high circulatory frequency of genes for beta-thalassemia, and it is a leading cause for anaemia and maemolysis in infants. Especially, beta-thalassemia is widespread in ethnic minorities. So this study was conducted to determine the prevalence of people carrying beta-thalassemia genes in Khmer ethnic, community in Bac Lieu province. 400 Khmer ethnic people were screened by different tests such as osmotic fracgility test ferritine., The result of genotype rate of beta-thalassemia determined by hemoglobin electrophoresis was, 33.5 percent in this community, in which people carrying genes of beta-thaI, HbEE, and HbAE were 2.5 percent, 2.25 percent, and 28.75 percent, respectively.
