Bilateral severe ocular surface disorder by total limbal stem cells deficiency is a challenge to the ophthalmologist. Reconstructive ocular surface by autologous cultured oral mucosal epithelial transplantation is a new solution that has been successfully applied in developed countries. This is an experimental and clinical study, prospective study to evaluate the results of cultured oral mucosal epithelial transplantation in rabbit and applied in treating patients with severe bilateral ocular surface disorders. In the experiment phase, 15 rabbits eye were transplanted with autologous oral mucosal epithelial; 14 rabbit eyes achieved good results, 1 eye with moderate results. In the clinical phase, culture oral mucosal epithelial transplantation was performed in 20 eyes of bilateral ocular surface disorder. 14 cases were successful; 6 cases failed, where 2 cases have deep damage into the anterior chamber due to the destruction of the graft by chemical substance and 4 cases have recurrent total corneal neovascularisation. Cultured oral mucosal epithelial transplantation is a relatively safe and effective procedure to treat patients with severe bilateral ocular surface disorders.
