
Anal fistula is a relatively common disease of ana-rectal region. There are 20 patients with anal fistula treated annually by surgical procedure in Department of Surgery, Can Tho General Hospital. Documents of patients with anal fistula were collected and analyzed (19972001) and patients were followed-up to assess the outcome of surgical treatment. 78 patients with fistulas included 63 males (80.8 percent) and 15 females (19.2 percent). Among them, 12/78 (15 percent) patients were recurrent fistulas. Majority of cases were intersphincteric and low trans-sphincteric fistulas (80.8 percent). The successful surgical result was 86.4 percent. The rates of intersphincteric and low trans-sphincteric fistulas are high. The postoperative recurrent rate is high. The intramural fistula is a rare type which is hard to be diagnosed and treated.
