
Prevalence of smoking among men in Vietnam was the highest in the world. The aim of the study was to assess the correlation between COPD and smoking habit among adult in Hanoi. A cross sectional study was carried out in 1500 subjects randomly selected from 5782 volunteers to a questionnaire survey of respiratory diseases conducted 3 years ago. The participants underwent Physical examinations and lung function tests. The results showed that prevalence of COPD among adult from 23 - 72 years old was 7.1 percent. 10 percent of the population over 40 years old had COPD. Smoking among men was 63 percent and ex - smoker was 19.3 percent. Prevalence of COPD and the severity of the diseases were more common among smokers and ex - smokers. Simillarly, passive smoking increased the risk of COPD. In conclusion, COPD had a strong correlation with smoking habit.
