Abstract

A retrospective study was conducted on records of 95 occupational injuries happened among 2763 workers. The burden of disease and economic losses due to occupational and injuries were estimated by using DALY and cost analysis methods, respectively. The results showed that among 95 occupational accidents, there were 71 mild cases (74.7 percent), 19 serious cases (20 percent) and 5 deaths (5.3 percent). The rate of occupational injury was 34.4 /1,000 workers, in which the fatal occupational injuries and non-fatal occupational injuries were 1.8 and 32.6/1,000 workers, respectively. Total inpatient and outpatient treatment days were 144 and 837 days, respectively, in which 21 percent of inpatient treatment were less than 7 days and 67.8 percent of outpatient treatment were less than 3 days. Total number of days off work and receiving salary was 975 days, in which majority were 3-7 days (74.4 percent). The average number: of days losing work capacity was 10.8 days/worker. Total number of year's life lost in 95 injured workers was 150.3 DALY (or 158 DALY/l00 workers), in which the burden of fatal occupational injuries was 148.9 IDAL Y (constituted for 99.1 percent of total DALY). The b.i:Jrden of occupational injuries was highest in workers under 30 years old (70.4 percent of total DALY) and in mine explosion workers (70 percent of total DALY). The estirnated economic losses (direct costs) per year in construction workers were 937.633 million Vietnamese dong, in which economic losses in operators were the highest (442.307 million Vietnamese dong and accounted for 47.2 percent in total). The findings of this study indicated the needs for continuing a study on occupational safety and health conditions, risk factors of occupational accidents and injuries as well as effective preventive measures in order to reduce burden of diseases and economic losses for employees, employers and society.
