Ước tính kích cỡ quần thể nghiện chích ma túy ở tỉnh Điện Biên năm 2011

Three different methods were applied to estimate the size of injecting drug users (IDU) in Dien Bien province in 2011. Police census estimated 3,748 IDUs. Multiplier method using secondary data from voluntary HIV testing and counseling (VCT) sites and recapture sample showed 3,560 IDUs on average with 95 percent confidence interval (CI) from 2,885 to 4,235. Unique object multiplier resulted the estimate of 3,476 IDUs (95 percent CI: 3,289 - 3,663). Upon analysis and consensuswith experts in Dien Bien, a range of IDUs in Dien Bien in 2011 was recommended with low and high estimates were 3,700 and 5,200 respectively. Three applied methods showed limitations in estimating mus in Dien Bien. More data sources and surveys need be used to assess the validity and feasibility of the methods.
