Background: In the early days of the "laparoscopic cholecystectomy era", acute cholecystitis was considered a contraindication to the laparoscopic approach. However, with increasing experience, a number of reports show that this is no longer the case. Till now, in Vietnam, very few studies on laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis were published. This study reviews the experience of laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis in Can Tho General Hospital. Methods: Retrospective and descriptive study Results: A total of 42 patients who had acute calculous cholecystitis underwent laparoscopic surgery between June 2002 and July 2004. Conversion to open cholecystectomy was required in 7 patients (16.7 percent). The mean operation time was 94 minutes. There was no intraoperative complication. Postoperative complications consisted of 2 mild infections of umbilical port and 1 mild subhepatic fluid collection. Three these cases were treated medically. There was no mortality. The mean hospital stay were 3.2 days. Conclusions: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy to treat acute calculous cholecystitis was safe procedure with short hospital stay.
