
Background: To evaluate the results of the emergency treatment of epistaxis. Patients and method: 151 patients with epistaxis were studied by prospective and descriptive study with clinical interventions. Results: Local treatment alone accounted for 71.5 percent, this combined with general treatment occupied 28.5 percent. Methods of general treatment in epistaxis: hemostatic drug was 20.5 percent, blood transfusion was 13.8 percent. Methods of local treatment in epistaxis: anterior nasal hemostasis was 80.1 percent, posterior nasal hemostasis was 19.9 percent. Anterior nasal hemostasis by anterior nasal gauze was 47.7 percent, Merocel 11.3 percent, cigarette of cotton 21.2 percent. Posterior nasal hemostasis by Foley catheter showed 16.5 percent, posterior nasal gauze was 3.3 percent. The complication rate of nasal hemostasis was 4.8 percent for the entire study in which ulceration of nasal mucous memberane was 4 percent and mucous membrane stickiness was 0.8 percent. Results of the treatment was good oa:upied 95.2 percent, moderate 4.8 percent. Mean of length for hospital stay was 5.4 + or - 2.5 days (3-15 days).
