Background: Malignancy of the larynx is a larger group of malignancies in Vietnam. The advanced stage of laryngeal carcinoma requires total laryngectomy which results in loss of speech along with other psychological and functional damages. Following total laryngectomy, trachea-oesophageal voice prosthesis offers the most reliable form of voice rehabilitation. Method: From Jan 2010 to April 2011, 10 laryngectomized patients underwent speech rehabilitation with vocal prosthesis insertion. Results: A success high rate was achieved with this surgical technique. No serious complications due to the prosthesis insertion were observed The problems assossicated with this procedure include leakage through and around the prosthesis, occlusion problems, jungal coloniation. Conclusions: The surgical procedure is simple and reproducible. Tracheoesophageal puncture is a common and reliable method of surgical speech rehabilitation in laryngectomy patients who do not have satisfactory esophageal spedech. Although the study have encountered several problems, still enthusiastically endorse this procedure since it provides oral communication.
