
Continuing education is very important in the nursing profession because it helps increase knowledge and competences of nurses, which lead to enhancing safe and high quality of services. The purposes of this descriptive correlational study were to explore the motivational orientation and participation in continuing education and to examine the relationship between the motivational orientation and participation in continuing education among staff nurses in general hospitals. By descriptive research design on 336 staff nurses who were working in three general hospitals The results of this study indicated that participation in continuing education as perceived by staff nurses was at a low level (X =10.10, SD=30.98) and motivational orientation to participate in continuing education among staff nurses was at a moderate level (X =17.10, SD=5.32). There was a positively significant correlation between motivational orientation and participation in continuing education among staff nurses (r=.109, p.0.05). In addition, four aspects of motivational orientation including cognitive interest, education preparation, professional advancement and family togetherness were positive statistically correlated with participation in continuing education.
