Objectives: Percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty (PBMV) has been performed safely during pregnancy with good results in many countries in the world. Since 2001 in Vietnam, PBMV has been performed for pregnant women with severe mitral stenosis. The present study determines the immediate and long-term outcomes of 112 pregnant women with severe rheumatic mitral stenosis after PBMV. Results: After PBMV, significant increase in mitral valve area from 0.89 + or - 0.23 to 1.87 + or - 0.38 cm2 (p 0.001), significant decrease in mean left atrial pressure 32.24 + or - 7.75 to 16.92 + or - 5.61, (p 0.001), mean diastolic mitral gradient 20.86 + or - 7.09 to 8.48 + or - 3.54mm Hg, (p 0.001), and mean pulmonary artery pressure 78.49 + or - 22.19 to 49.68 + or - 14.95, (p 0.001), with no maternal and neonatal death. Mean fluoroscopy time was 2.11 + or -1.08 min. Conclusions: During pregnancy PBMV is feasible, safe and effective.
