
Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease that has been known for a long time, but so far is one of the infectious diseases have high morbidity and mortality in the worldwide. In Vietnam, along with HIV/AIDS, drug resistance situation and the impact of population growth affect tuberculosis epidemiological, creating challenges for TB prevention and control activities. For TB is detected early, the people should have the basic knowledge about TB. Objective: To describe knowledge about TB among patients with cough more than 2 weeks in Ba Vi district, Hanoi in 2012. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study. Direct interview patients aged 15 years and older with chronic cough, using a structured questionnaire. Results: Only 24 percent of study participants answered correctly causes of TB. 17 percent of patients still believe that TB is being hereditary. 12.2 percent did not know TB is infectious disease. 25.3 percent the subjects did not know any suspected symptom of TB. 66.6 percent of respondents knew that TB can be cured. Education level and economic conditions of households related to the TB knowledge (p0.05). Conclusions: To reduce stigma towards TB, basic knowledge about TB must be provided by health education activities. So suspect TB persons will visit health providers earlier for diagnosis. For the poor and less educated groups need to be focus on developing understandable messages and accessible communication methods.
