
A restrospective study on epidemiological characteristics of malaria and malaria was conducted in Huong Hoa, a district in Viet Nam-Laos border area of Quang Tri province, where malaria is hyper-endemic. The study results showed that: In comparison with 2006, total number of malaria cases and number of confirmed cases in 2010 were reduced by 48.5 percent and 22.8 percent respectively; the annual malaria morbidity was still high and ranged between 9.9 and 22.5 per 1,000 population; two malaria species, P. falciparum and P. vivax were found in the study site of which P. falciparum accounted for over 88 percent; two main malaria vectors, Anminimus and Andirus, were present in the study site; the number of malaria cases was not evenly distributed among communes of the district, the communes in border area had higher malaria incidence than the others; malaria in the study site is clearly seasonal with higher number of malaria cases found from June to October annually, corresponding to the rainy season Every year, there was a large number of Laos People came to district for malaria consultation with more than 16 percent of the total malaria cases detected and treated in the district were Laotians.
