Novel sustained-release bioadhesive vaginal tablets of Acyclovir 200 mg were developed. The developed formulation showed the ACV release and bioadhesion properties of the tablets were controllable by changing each and/or both the type and concentration of polymer excipients. Carbopol 934P and hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose E6 were chosen as candidate bioadhesive polymers. The swelling behavior, bioadhesive strength and in vitro release of the prepared tablets were investigated. The results suggested that the main factor affecting the release rate of acyclovir and bioadhesive strength was the amount of Carbopol 934P. The optimal formula of bioadhesive tablets of Acyclovir was able of sustaining the ACV release up to 12 hours was chosen. Bioadhesion of the developed formulations would assure a longer period of reslaence time, to offer better therapy availability.
