Background: To investigate the relation of diastolic blood pressure in pregnancy associated nephro-urology diseases with birth weight. Material and method: Prospective study, with 64 pregnant patients with nephro-urology associated diseases of which 50 had a birth weight recorded. Data were entered by trained clerks and standard definitions for clinical measurements, giving high quality data. Results: The mean (SD) birth weight of babies born to mothers with before 38 weeks gestation was 1675 g) and there were 2766g after 38 weeks gestation. The birth weight of babies born to mothers with no hypertension before 38 weeks' gestation 2500 was 47.4 percent compared with hypertension 90.9 percent. The mean (SD) The birth weight of babies being delivered by mothers with systolic blood pressures of above 140 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressures of above 90 mm Hg was lower significantly compared with normotensive mothers ( 1504 g vs 2389g and 1461g vs 2269g. p 0.05). Conclusions: Both high diastolic and/or systolic blood pressures in women during pregnancy associated with nephro-urology diseases are associated with small babies.
