
The study applied the data collection method via reviewing of available documents, current regulations and studies on human resources of the health service provision system in Vietnam. Findings show that: 1) The number of health workers increased in the period 2005-2009, especially in nursing staff and midwives. The number of doctors increased a bit; 2) The nursing staff were found at the highest proportion among health staff at hospitals (37.0 percent), followed by medical staff (22.5 percent) and pharmaceutical staff (6.1 percent); 3) The structure and distribution of health workers were unequal at the levels. The number of doctors at the central level was 47.8 times higher than that of assistant doctors; this ratio was lower at the provincial, district and communal levels; 4)The proportion of postgraduates in medicine was 43.3 percent of the examination and treatment staff, that of pharmaceutical staff was 3.7 percent; and only less than 0.1 percent of nurses nationwide had master's degrees.
