In order to determine the correlation between protein-creatil)ine ratio and 24 hour urinary protein, one hundred samples of urine (24h and random samples) were collected from 50 chidren with nephritic syndrome at the nephrology department in NHP. The 24 h urine total protein and random urine protein-creatinine ratio were assessed on these samples. Good correlation (r = 0082, P 0.001) was found between random urine protein-creatinine ratio and 24h urine protein excretion. Using ROC curves analysis, the random urine protein-creatinine ratios of 0.99 (sensitivity 77.3 percent; specificity 71.4 percent), 1.9 (sensitivity 91.2 percent; specificity 70.6 percent), 4.18mg/mg (sensitivity 90 percent; specificity 80.5 percent) reliably predicted 24 hour urine total protein equivalent "thresholds" of 0.3, 1 and 3.5g/day, respectively. The authors concluded that the random urine proteincreatinine ratio can be used reliably to assess the degree of proteinuria in children with nephrotic syndrome.
