
Low back pain is very common disorder, heavily affects the patient's qulity of life and becomes an economic burden to themselves and the society. In Vietnam, there is no such a study to investigate risk. factors of low back pain, which, if available, would help develope measures to prevent the condition. Objectives. To detamine the prevalence of low back pain in the community and to identify potential risk factors for low back pain. Subjects and Methods. An epidemiological, cross-sectional, and desbiptive study was carried out during the period from May 2009 to Oct. 2009 on 6,614 persons, aged 18 or older, who lived in the districts of Dong Da and Soc Son of Hanoi city and Kim Bang district of Ha Nam province. Results: The overall prevalence of low back pain in the surveyed communities was 32.0 percent. Risk factors for low back pain induclecl female gender [OR (CI:95 percent): 1.56 (1.41 - 1.74) (36.5 percent)], age over 40 (40 percent); obesity grade II [OR (CI:95 percent): 4.4 (1.1 - 17.6)], and occupations requiring prolonged poor or odd postures; such as prolonged standing [OR (CI: 95 percent): 1.4 (1.2 - 1.5)], bending [OR (CI: 95 percent): 1.6 (1.5 - 1.8)], pushing and pulling [OR (CI: 95 percent): 2.0 (1.7 - 2.2)]; lifting heavy objects over 25 kg [OR (CI: 95 percent): 2.5 (2.3 - 2.8)]; and body vibrating [OR (CI:95 percent): 2.1 (1.5 - 3.2)]. Condusions. There is 32.0 percent of population in the oommunity reported having low back pain. Risk factors of low back pain indude gender, age, overweighed and obese cxmditions, and certain cxx:upations with prolonged poor postures.
