Abstract

Tracheal resection - end to end anastomosis operation in the treatment of the tracheal stenosis is the surgical approach that develops at lower pace in comparision with others in thoracic surgery. Recently, this surgery has been performed at some thoracic surgery centres in Vietnam. There are many methods in the treatment of tracheal stenosis such as T-tube, tracheal stent, treatment using laser and tracheal resection - end to end anastomosis operation in Thoracic Department, No.108 Military Central Hospital. From July 2007 to July 2011/ 30 cases with diagnosis of tracheal stenosis aged 18-72 were operated. Diagnosis of tracheal stenosis was based on the clinical symptoms and multi slice CT images. The main cause of tracheal stenosis was based on the clinical symptoms and multi slice CT images. The length of cut-off tracheal segment wasfrom 2 to 45 cm. The operative results showed excellent outcome in 28/30 case (93.3 percent); good in 01 case (there was a hypertrophic granulation at anastomosis causing slight tracheal stenosis but patient didn't have symptom of breathlessness in daily actions); and death in 01 case with a carcinoma tumor, in which tracheal stenosis was caused by surgical removal with radiation therapy followed. The patient died after tracheal resection - end to end anastomosis operation from wound complication (infection and arterial bleeding). Conclution: Tracheal resection- end to end anastomosis operation is a good surgical method in the treatment of tracheal stenosis with good outcome in 93.3 percent (28/30) of cases.
