Objective: Determine the rates of hydronephrosis on ultrasound before and after clearance of obstruction caused by ureteral stones and the factors related to the degree of hydronephrosis in the period of indwelling double JJ ureteral stent. Material and Methods: This is a cross-sectional prospective study at Viet Tiep hospital from April 2011 to May 2012 for the patients with hydronephrosis from 1st to 3rd degree, who was removed ureteral stone and indwelled double J ureteral stent by the interventional methods: ureteroscopic stone extraction, laparoscopic stone surgery, and open stone surgery. Results: There were 98 ureteral stone cases with mean age of 49.13 +/- 12.67, male/female: 1/2 ratio, mean disease history: 32 +/- 34.77 months. Before clearance of obstruction, there were 19 (19.4 percent) cases of hydronephrosis 1st degree, 45 (45.9 percent) cases of hydronephrosis 2nd degree, 34 (34.7 percent) cases of hydronephrosis 3rd degree. After clearance of obstruction, there were 84 (85.7 percent) cases improved hydronephrosis degrees. Hydronephrosis 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree returning normal renal: 14/1 9 cases, 20/45 cases, and 7/34 cases; hydronephrosis 2nd down to 1st degree: 17/45 cases; Hydronephrosis 3rd down to 1st or 2nd degree: 26/34 cases. Conclusion: The beginning morphology of hydronephrosis on ultrasound affects to the improvement of hydronephrosis degree in the period of dwelling double JJ ureteral stent. The higher degree of hydronephrosis is the longer and lower improved hydronephrosis after clearance of obstruction.
