This descriptive study describes the coverage and performance of village health workers in some disadvantaged provinces. Results showed that the coverage of village health workers was above 90 percent, but their educational level was still low. More than 50 percent village health workers have not been trained or were trained for only 3 month. Most village health workers were not equipped with village medical bag and common medicines; the equipments were outdated. The main tasks of village health workers were health education, preventive hygiene, support the National targeted programs, but not performing first aid management. Allowance for village health workers varies between provinces and was generally. Recruiment and training policy for village health workers should be strengthened; village medical bags with updated equipments should be provided. It is necessary to increase the allowance for village health workers and provide them with health insurance.
