This study was to evaluate the effectiveness of controling blood pressure on the size of intracerebral hematoma. 30 patients with intracranial bleeding, with a blood pressure over 160/90 mmHg; patients were treated aggressively with intravenous nicardipine within 6 hours of cerebral hemorrhage to control the blood pressure to under 140/90 mmHg within the first 24 - hours of admission at the Emergency Department at Bach Mai Hospital during December, 2011 to November 2012. Blood pressure is controlled after 30 minutes and maintained for 24 hours. The hematoma volume is not increased after 24 hours compared to 0 hour (p 0.05). Glasgow score and NIHSS are unchanged after treatment compared to before treatment (p 0.05). The results showed that the intensive blood pressure lowering treatment is associated with reduction in hematoma growth and maintenance of stable neurological status.
