
Objective: To study the coverage rate of cataract surgery and post-op visual acuity result in patient who underwent cataract surgery in 16 provinces. Subjects: patient 50 year and older, diagnosed with cataract, lived in one of 16 provinces. Methods: descriptive study, data collected through Rapid Assesment of Avoidable Blindness. Results: The surgery coverage is more than one third of the eyes which need to be operated (36 percent). Based on number of patient, the surgery rate is 54 percent, highest in Ninh Thuan provinces: 87 percent, Ho Chi Minh city: 77 percent, and lowest in Nghe An provinces: 26 percent. Post-op visual acuity result is: good in 59 percent and bad in 24 percent of patient. In group with IOL, the rate of patient with good visual acuity is 67 percent, In group without IOL, the rate of patient with good visual acuity is 14 percent. Conclusion: The mission of cataract surgery in prevention of blindness has not yet reach the quality and quantity criteria.
