Objective: A standard quantification procedure for analyzing neovascularization on angiograms has not 'been established in the literature. Subject and method: In this study, a new method for quantifying neovascularization using a standard integral line plate including 25 evenly-spaced lines corresponding to a 15 cm flap length, which was subsequently analyzed under a 2x magnification loupe the authors developed. The vessel quantity was determined by counting the total number of times where vessels perfused by Micropaque intersected the integral lines over the entire surface of the flap. Result: This new method was used for quantifying neovascularization in 156 prefabricated flaps. The number of vessels perfused by Micropaque on angiogams created by various types of implanted pedicles was similar to that counted in the control flaps, reaching an average number of 255.4 vessels (107.2 percent in comparison with the control flaps). Conclusion: The technique is very simple and useful, allowing the precise determination of the amount of neovascularization in prefabricated flaps on angiograms.
