This study aimed to elucidate the HPV prevalence and genotype distribution among cervical cancer samples have been collected at clincal department of the National Cancer Hospital in northern Vietnam. Research protocol was approved by the ethics committee of the Haiphong University of Medicine and Pharmacy. By the cross section study from July 2013 to December 2013, total 188 fresh cervical cancer samples have been collected at clincal department of the National Cancer Hospital in northern Vietnam. Reverse dot blot and/or direct sequence were used to genotype for only positive samples with HPV-DNA by amplifying L1 gene using original and modified GPS+/GP6+ primers. Data were analyzed using statistical software medicine. The results shown that the rate of positive HPV DNA was 89.4 percent in the cervical cancer samples. The HPV genotype 16 and HPV genotype 18 was positive in 66.8 percent and 44.4 percent of the positive HPV DNA group. 73.4 percent of HPV infection were single infection. The high risk HPV genotypes were found in all of the single infection cases, such as: 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 51, 52, 58, 59, and 66. The HPV genotype 16 and/or HPV genotype 18 were found at 94.6 percent in the single infection group. Prevalence of HPV genotype 16 and 18 were highest in cervical cancer samples that have been collected from patients in northern Vietnam. the results will be basic for studies on the correlation of HPV genotypes and histology categories of cervical cancer as well as HPV genotype 16; 18 variants based on E6, E7 genes of the patients in northern Vietnam.
